Sunny Garden Tomatoes

Heirloom_Tomatoes-1

Sunny Garden Tomatoes will be joining us at the Farmer’s Market this weekend selling a wide variety of heirloom tomato plants.

The tomatoes are “non-certified organic”, non-GMO, non-hybrid.  They use homemade compost, and local seaweed in their potting soil mix.  This results in a strong & hearty plant that is more pest-resistant and produces a more flavorful fruit.

11 Heirloom Tomato varieties available:

Yellow Pear Cherry – Sweet heavy producer – indeterminate (produces until frost)

Sungold – Sweet cherry, heavy producer – indeterminate (produces until frost)

Boxcar Willy (red) – Red slicing tomato, determinate (larger fruit, 1 heavy harvest)

Abe Lincoln (red) – Red slicing tomato, determinate (larger fruit, 1 heavy harvest)

Lg Red Cherry Plum – Plum shaped large red cherry – indeterminate (produces until frost)

Generally, cherry tomatoes provide more small fruit throughout the growing season, whereas slicing tomatoes ripen all in the same month, then die off.

Nothing is nicer than a multicolored bowl of tomato salad with fresh olive oil, balsamic or red wine vinegar, sea salt, and basil or oregano! Another favorite is toasted sourdough bread slathered with mayo and slices of fresh garden tomatoes!

WHEN:  Sunday November 23rd, 2014  10am – 1pm

Our farmers will be bringing a number of hearty fall vegetables and meat, last year I picked up a few beautiful delicata squash and roasted them up with bacon, brussel sprouts and topped it with a maple glaze. Get creative and add something different to the roundup this year, what better way to do that than with some fresh local produce?  Talk to the farmer’s and vendors, if you are unsure of how to cook something, most likely they’ll have a variety of suggestions on how to best serve it up.  David from Salem Spice is another great resource, show him the vegetables or meat that you picked up and he’ll tell you what seasonings or spices will complement it best.

Our food vendors joining us this year will be:

Piper Ranch Beef

Long Hill Orchard

Clark Farm

Grant Family Farm

Salem Spice

Alfalfa Farm Winery

Eventide Confections

The Cannoli Corner

Witch City Salsa

Deano’s Pasta

Melissa’s Honey Pot will be bringing several different flavors and varieties of local honey, honey sticks, locally made syrup, maple candy and maple sugar!

The Soup Guy will have a special Cranberry Squash soup for the Thanksgiving market.
